A face-lift is the most comprehensive cosmetic surgery to rejuvenate the face. It is a very aggressive way to remove the appearance of wrinkles caused by age. In this procedure the skin is literally lifted off the face so the skin and the tissues beneath can be tightened. The skin is then carefully repositioned smoothly over the face. Face lifts are only performed when the patient is given a general anesthesia or a sedative through an intravenous line.
How is it done?
After the patient is carefully sedated so they can feel no pain the surgeon carefully makes an incision that starts in the temple area and circles around front of the ear. After that the skin is raised, and the muscle and tissue underneath is tightened which is the key. The surgeon if required may remove some fat and skin to give better results. After that the skin is then redraped over the face and the incision is closed off with sutures. To make sure no one can see the incision a skilled plastic surgeon will make sure the incision falls along the hairline so it can be hidden in the natural crease which no one see after the surgery.
What To Expect After Surgery and the precaution one must take
The patients face will be bandaged after the surgery and the dressings are removed after 1 or 2 days. Usually a drainage tube is been placed which is also removed after 1 to 2 days. The removal of stitches may take anywhere between 5 to 10 days. In the meanwhile you will be prescribed medicines to relieve pain after the surgery. Do not be alarmed if you see any swelling and bruising of the face because that is part of the healing process but using cold compresses can help decrease these side effects.
Also it is important not to smoke 4 weeks before and after surgery. Tobacco smoke will delay your face’s healing process and make scarring worse. You must take plenty of rest and after two to three weeks you can return to normal activities.
